Default Which Lightweight Battery is Better? Odyssey or Braille?

I am thinking about changing my battery to either an Odyssey or a Braille lightweight battery to save on some weight. Which one is better and why?

braille is a lot better. A lot of my friends had both and said that braille was much better in cold weather starts.

Interesting, is that so, droog?
I think I'll try one.
My Odyssey weighs 14.5 pounds WITHOUT metal jacket - this thing weighs 11.something.

I am curious, are there any disadvantages to running a battery like these compared to a regular sized one? Do these have less capacity or something? Less available amps for cranking? My friend recently switched to a cone filter on his Evo8 which required going to a very small battery similar to these, i wondered if they have any drawbacks or not.

Also how do you go about mounting these into the stock battery tray? How much weight do they actually save over a regular battery?

GO to VWVORTEX.com and search forums for Braille. it will answer ALL your questions. A lot of people running them in their VR6 VW's for some time now which requre some good cranking power.

I know a guy who owns USrally team, the place that sells those. They sell a universal bracket. I talked about putting this battery in 944sto tifo before but tottaly forgot about it. You'll save around 30pounds. I can talk to this guy about a group buy, we arranged one for VW's about 1.5 years ago. Not that i can benefit from it... my car is on jack stands till summer 06

Vlad, thanks for the info. I will poke around on VW forums for info.

As long as mounting the battery securley isnt too much of a fuss, i may be interested in a group buy also. Time to break out the credit card!

How is the S2 and that GTi you were restoring doing? And did you decide to keep that other 944 or part it out?

I'll e-mail jeff@USRT about a group buy today. I don't know how many people we'll need to go ahead with it. Last time we did it on vwvortex we got it for $130 shipped.

Jon, S2 is curently grounded till somer. I can't really justify driving it for 10 miles a month during school year and paying $100 a month in insurance. I should start parting the 84 944 in a coupla weeks(i've been saying that to myself since i bought the S2). I finished the GTI project and have been daly driving it to school/work for the past 3 month. I love that car so much, handling is amazing. I wish i could autox it but the car cuts out during hard cornering due to a clogged gas tank pickup tube. I got a new engine for it, new gas tank and a bunch of stuff, i'll be stripping it to bare shell and repainting it too on the winter break. Thanks for asking!!!

How do these racing batteries function in daily drivers? I imagine it would be a bad idea to use the radio without the car running...but I don't do that anyways. Would I have to worry about the car starting on the way to work?

Hi Vlad,
If you can organize a group buy for $130 shipped or better, I am sure you will get a decent amount of participants. You can count me in for 2 at that price or better. Thanks in advance.

I've e-mailed them already. We'll see how it goes. I will talk to tedwright about a group buy post just to see how many people will be interested. I think last time we did it we had to have at least 30 confirmed buyers.

You can turn the battery anyway you want it. It's really small.

Here's one of the vortex threads. THere are many more it's just that the search is down on the 'tex.

BTW, the guy who sells these is a professional rally driver

just to let those who are interested know. I'm currently talking to a Braille distributor, his responses are kinda slow, i'll give him a ring and have a straight, no BS talk, about a group buy. I don't have that much time on myu hands daily because of school/work
