Default What is the lifespan of Hoosier Race Tires?

I am purchasing a set of wheels with about 1/2 used Hoosier race tires that have been sitting around in the garage for several years. Are these tires still good for the track or is it better to replace them? Is there anything I should look for to determine if it is still good or not?
The seller says he would use them for auto crossing but probably won't for the track. What do you think?

you can look at the code near the bead, it should give you a date, in the form of week/year (one digit)
hoosiers, depending if they are stored out of the sun in the proper manner have a shelf life of I think about 3 yrs. I would not except much out of an old set... most hoosiers we put on race cars are a year old max!

check for dry rot. I have some old toyo that used up, but kept as car storage wheels/tires. These are all cracked around the edges. I would not drive them more than 10 mph and they just for getting the car on/off the trailer and letting it sit.

Old hoosiers are probaly worth nothing at all. Rubber is old and hard with no grip.

Picked up the set and the tires actually look very good to me. The sidewalls are still kind of sticky and no signs of any cracks what so ever. The tread is a little hard but that is expected since the tires went through a couple heat cycles. I think the owner said it was stored for almost 4 years but this guy races and these were on his 911 that he use to race but ever since he got a real race car, he hasn't tracked his 911 for several years and that is why he is selling the set.
Is there a place on the tire that shows when it was produced? I just want to make sure it is safe to take onto the tracks.

Ive been club racing on hoosiers since 2000. My guess is that they are garbage. Hoosiers do not last at all. They start to loose grip after 3 heat cycles and drop off fast after that. If theyve been sitting around for "several" years, they will probably have less grip than an average street tire.

They are safe to drive, they wont explode or anything, but dont expect them to stick. The difference between old/dried out Hoosiers and brand new ones is unbelieveable.

Vulcanization at it's best. Turn them into a tire swing or something. They're going to be worthless grip wise.
