Default aftermarket keyless entry question

I installed an audiovox keyless entry kit on my car this past weekend. Everything is perfect except the reception. It only works right nex to the car. I am thinking the antena, which is very short and sitting in my passenger footwell, can be lengthened and run up to the top of the dash. Is there a certain type of wire i need to look for to lengthen the antena?

You know, I was just thinking to myself the other day that I would like to install a keyless system in my car. How much did this unit cost you? How hard was the install?

Default some advice on these kits

I've installed a few of these kits (alarm, remote start, remote door/hatch unlock). One was installed in my '85 944, another in a Buick Regal and the last in my wife's Toyota Landcruiser.

If you're planning to install it yourself buy quality. Some of these kits are cheaply priced for a reason.

Look for a kit with a good warranty and an 800 number for support

I'll probably pay one of the local, established audio shops to install my next one even if it costs more.

I always had intermittant reception issues on 2 of the 3 systems on my cars. Remote controls sometimes go bad too. One of the systems quit working altogether about 4 years after installation. I'm at the point in my life where I would rather pay more and get service to go with the sale.

YMMV,
Rick

I lengthened the antena on mine and ran it up the driver side of the dash and then inside the body weatherstrip that runs the outline of the door opening (it is hollow). It works better but only if you are on the driver's side of the car. I think I will re-route it across the top of the windshield right under the header that the visors screw into.

The install wasn't hard. I did the door locks, rear hatch and parking lights flash. It took a few hours, but most of that was just looking over wiring diagrams.

aribop, what type of wire did use to lengthen the antena?
