Default Mystery Oil Leak

Hmmm, I've discovered that I'm leaking oil somewhere on the driver side rear part of the engine. The only things I can think of back there are a possibly leaking oil filler tube and rear main seal. Hey wait, just outta curiousity, is the oil pressure relief valve back there too? What the hell does that OPRV even look like

Oil press relief is in/on the oil filter-cooler housing on the front/passenger side corner of the engine.

Could be, as you mentioned, the rear main, filler tube lower seal, dipstick tube seal, oil pan gasket, etc. Or have you spilled any while adding oil? It will run down the sides of the filler/breather and down the back and driver side of the block and run off the side of the oil pan.

My last oil change was about 3 weeks ago. I don't think I spilled any oil, but if that filler tube is leaking, I am thinking that this could be collected oil that had leaked out after adding some recently.

Ack, I hope it's not that pan gasket. I don't feel like doing one of those any time soon I'm sure it probably is though...

I'm gonna give it a healthy examination when I come back home.

hey just outta curiousity, how long would it usually take to do an oil pan gasket? Paragon has an article that shows rod bearings, but I just want to do the pan gasket for now. It looks like they have to use some sort of hoist to hold the engine up. Is this really necessary to get that oil pan off too??

More than likely it is your balance shaft housing o-ring. Take a flashlight and point it towards the upper balance shaft belt from the Filler cap. You may see a pool of oil just in front of the air oil seperator on a ledge of the engine, there are also two o-rings on the Air oil seperator that are prone to drying out and leaking. Hope this helps.

Sorry I didn't get the chance to see your reply yesterday. There is a balance shaft seal in the rear of the motor? It looks like the oil is right on the ledge just below and in front of the oil filler tube. If this is the balance shaft seal, how hard is this to change????

there is a rear seal, as well as a front seal. Front will leak by the rotor and cap.

Take the intake/Intakemanifold off and you can get a much better view of the problem..

UPDATE: I had my buddy take a look at the car for me during my lunch. The oil filler tube is leaking at 1 of the 2 seals going to the block. Whew...at least it wasn't the head gasket. I'm ordering parts as we speak. Methinks a get wrenched party for this one

For the bump....

Allow me to be the first to say that I have probably the highest oil consuming 944 on this board to date at 1 quart every 60 miles

Can anyone tell me after I replace these seals if I can use RTV silicone or valve cover gasket silicone around the sealed area to make sure oil doesn't seep out of that area again?
