Exclamation ??squealing??

So there is a squealing noise I think is coming from the power steering pump. Turning the wheel seems to have no effect, RPM seems to have no effect. I drove 600 miles Saturday and no issues, didn't drive her at all Sunday. Fired her up this morning and she was squealing.
I'm no master mechanic so if anyone with some experience in the Roseville area might have some free time to swing by I would greatly appreciate it. Any other suggestions \ ideas please comment.

Thanks all
So I removed the belt from the power steering pump and the squealing noise still exists. The balance shaft belt is VERY loose. Recommendations please.

TIA

Belts whine, bearings screech!

That simple phrase can save your *** sometime - and catch something important going.

Did you check the reservoir, and see if you had the CORRECT amount of PS fluid? There is a level for Hot and Cold, and you can't mess that up (you don't want too much pressure nor not enough).

If you have no change in noise by turning the wheel, I would guess the tension on the belt has changed, and you should double check that.

Disconnect the BB belt and see if the sound persists.
If it is a bearing, you will probably have shavings in your oil.
Def proceed with caution...

Should I drain the oil to check it first?

It wouldn't hurt to check the oil - better safe than sorry. Try using a mechanic's stethoscope on some areas of the engine while it's running so you can isolate the noise. If you don't have one, a long screwdriver works just as well - put the end against different parts of the engine (PS pump, timing belt rollers, water pump, maybe oil pan, etc.) and put the handle into your ear. I assume your alternator/AC belt is tight.
Like Serge said, it's OK to tension the BS belt by hand. It should be pretty loose, but not loose enough to flap around. If it is flapping, maybe it's rubbing on something and making the noise. HTH

Not a bad idea to drain the oil. The Balance shafts don't run on steel bearings though. The steel shaft runs in journals that are align-bored in the aluminum from the factory, so the shrapnel won't stick to the magnetized drain plug. Take the oil filter off and cut it open to see what was trapped...
