Default Slave cylinder rebuild kit

The slave cylinder in 87 944 n.a. is leaking like crazy. Something has to be done. I called around and found that advance has a rebuild kit for the slave cylinder. One kit comes with just seals for $14 and the other kit comes with the seals and the piston for $34. Which one should I buy? Does the piston in this thing wear out? Or should I just buy a complete new one and bolt it on.

I went through 2 replacement *** replacement slave cylinders. They lasted about 6 months each. The last time I got the seal kit and did it myself. I didnt need the piston. It was messy to do and certainly takes more time to hone/replace the seals. I did it because I didnt trust the replacement units. When you factor in the time it takes to do the reseal it really isnt much cheaper than buying a whole new one, unless you have alot more time than money.

I really don't have alot of time or money, but my time is free of charge so I will probably rebuild it. If you would, please tell if there is anything special that I need to know. Did you just use a brake hone to clean up the inside, before replacing the seals? Any info from anybody would be a great help.

There is a good chance that once you get it apart, you will see pitting at the far end of the bore. Its worth taking a peek but probably not repairable - only very small imperfections can be honed out. Good luck...bruce

I used a brake hone to clean it up. The only thing I did wrong once was to put the accordian-looking dust seal in backwards. Look at the old seal as it comes out, it actually goes inside the slave cylinder rather than sit outside of it. You will know what I mean when you take it apart.
