Default Anyone here thought of this?

I was wondering, since the 944 has such a big sunroof to begin with, has anyone ever thought of going the distance to make it a true targa?

I'd imagine that the door would have to be adressed as well, but it would be fun, eh? I'm not thinking of doing this any time in the immediate future, but maybe down the road. Also, the structural stiffness would be severly comprimised, and that would have to be taken into consideration as well.

Any thoughts?

strengthening of the C-pillar would be seriously necessary on the car. You would also lose the B-pillar and it would look horrid

My friend has a supra targa and even it bends so much that you can only get the top back on when the car is parked in a level garage. Short of puting a role cage in it i think the 944 body would bend way to much.

I'm thinking about having a friend help me take the hatch window off and with the sunroof off, windows down I think that would be pretty sweet. Kind of like having a roll bar in the back!

I doubt if you want to do it more than once: 3 people needed, and alignment to make the locks match the holes is a bit tedious.

I've seen a lot of homemade convertibles. They all look terrible. The tops never fit right, they leak, they have terrible wind noise, and they flex too much. This would fall into the same boat I fear. The roof provides far too much structure. Sounds like a lot of work to wreck a car. I do agree that the idea is neat, but I'd advise against it.

I think an S2 cabriolet with a custom hardtop (just a C pillar and rear windshield) would achieve the targa look sufficiently, and those models are already reinforced for toplessness. It would probably be cheaper, definitely be sturdier, but will of course lack the hatch. Maybe the trunk lid can be replaced with a custom hatch that will fit with the custom C pillar hardtop thingy? Just throwing out ideas...

That's all fine and dandy, but I was thinking of a more traditional targa. Then get one of those[ corny ] hatch replacement pieces, or something similar:

Then modify (painstakingly) the door so it had no window frame.

Hope you all get the idea.

that's an ASSLOAD of work tho to chop up a NICE car. i think someone else said it before, but possibly make something like a hard top cover (like on the boxster, and the 911, and then modify THAT piece to become a targa. seems like a lot less work, and lots cheaper than possibly messing up a 944 frame.

EDIT- oops, i guess arash did say something like what i said. oops.....i guess i should start reading the entire thread before commenting.....
