Starter Brushes?
Anybody know of a place to get brushes for the starter? I want to powder coat my starter and while I have it apart I want to change the brushes. I will be doing the same to the alternator just need to find bearings for it. Both worked well before removal just want to "freshen" them up. Thanks in advance!

Will you be driving with a mirror under the car or is this a show car?
Iceshark is most knowledgable about the starter and charging systems of these cars and may be able to point you in the right direction.

Not a show car and no mirrors! It's not a daily driver, though. I am sort of "****" that way though. I had to have it off for the flywheel lock during the head gasket replacement so...just another case of "while you're there and it's off you might as well do it."
Thanks for the info! If no other suggestions I'll send him a PM.
Chuck.

I did mine on my own, in two different ways:
1. Rennlister "dsmog" owns a starter/alternator shop. He was able to get me a full assembly (brushes already soldered onto the wires, with the plastic frame, clips, and wire that leads to the solenoid. He was also able to get me the rubber bushings that go bad inside the starter.
2. I bought the brushes from a local starter/alternator shop (I think VW shares many of the same internal starter parts), and solder them myself. But be warned, you need a lot of heat to do the side with the wire leading to the solenoid - there's a lot of mass that soaks up the heat from the soldering iron.
Hope this helps.
