Default 968 Voltage Regulator Replacement - can it be done on the car?

Has anyone replaced the voltage regulator on the 968 with the alternator on the car?

Want to try the VR first before I go through the hassle of pulling the alternator.

Any BTDT? Can it be done? Does the shroud need to come off?

FWIW - you can run a 30 minute race at Summit Point without the charging system - and win

Whoa...thats a tight squeeze, but it can be done if the J-boot, and intercooler pipe is removed. The shroud can be positioned slightly away from the alternator, while the two thin bolts can be replaced with stud posts- for easier hand-installation. Even a long thumbscrew(type used in PCs) can be a good substitute.

The magnets on voltage regulars are very fragile -- I've snapped them off with the stupid thing removed. I'm not sure if I'd even want to try to pull off a tight squeeze job for the fear of breaking it off.

It's not that hard to remove the alternator. I loosened the tensioner on the AC compressor and swung it in to remove the belt. Once you get the intake stuff out of the way, its easy to pull the alternator. I can pull it in about 20 minutes once the car is on jackstands.

I recommend this because I like the idea of having the alternator tested while its out of the car after changing the VR.
