Great stories everyone, keep them coming!
I now realize a regret... I should have bought one sooner, now I have a lot to learn. I spent my college years keeping my '82 Accord running, it could have been a 944. In my defense, ebay wasn't around then, and used parts would have been hard to find. You younger guys are fortunate to have these great cars pretty affordable now.
My car is supposed to be picked up on Wed. now and headed this way, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

True, dat! I remember a housemate telling about a little Redmond company, how great DOS 2.0 was, and how I should invest in this company.

Why?: Always loved european sports cars. My sister used to race stock cars, and i absolutely loved watching. However, I realize that driving around in a circle, although exhilirating, is not as difficult as driving a road course. I have wanted to race in a road course event since i was in high school. Am finally finishing my 944 DE car to get some DE's under my belt, and eventually some club racing perhaps. Had never seen a 944 until i came across one on ebay one day. Bought it because i had some money burining a hole in my pocket, and it has a porsche badge. I am sure you have heard of that before. I have since got it running and am addicted.

With respect to question one, do you mean biologically or emotionally?
1) 38
2) I am addicted to track driving. I started with a 2002 Boxster S and then moved to a 2002 911. Most of the track rats I know, and one in particular, kept telling me that if I really wanted to learn how to drive fast, I needed to lose all the HP and learn how to momentum drive. They all raved about na 944s. I took their advice. I went from 325 HP to 150 HP, but I am having a blast with my '84 SCCA ITS spec race car. Too much fun.
3) Life is too short for regrets. I am pretty happy with how things are now.

Why: Best $3000 car around that wasn't rotting. I looked at an '87 E30 with rot near the dead pedal not 10 minutes before I stumbled upon my 944.
Differently: Nothing. I saw the 944 the Monday of one week, for sale on a rural road. Saturday, I pointed it out to my dad, and we stopped and looked. The next day, we went back, looked it over, test drove it, and bought it.
So far, it's been fairly good for not having a PPI. The oil cooler and HG failed at around the times they were supposed to. Transmission is excellent with Redline in it. It mostly needed someone to go around the car, oiling and greasing things, compound the paint, and take the dent out of the nose panel. Beyond that, it's been a solid car.

I'm 19 and had my first Porsche (1988 944 S 79k) at age 17. You can see from my signature that I like the euro car scene, especially the wierd ones. Gotta have the Turbo though!
There it is next to my friend's (one of my all-time favorites) M3. He's 19 as well and has the itch for fast cars.
I don't think that I am biased toward any particular brand, though I like the european philosophy and Porsche seems to produce the best overall package for a luxo-performance car.

had one since i turned 16. currently on my second(first one is no longer with us). dad loves porsches, and said that the 944 are one of the best they ever made. he works on imports at a shop in northern virginia. theyre reliable, cute, and have good pick-up. he also bought me and my brother one so we couldnt cart around our friends. with only 2 seats no one fits. now that im in college its nice to be "the girl here who drives the porsche".

Why: If its good enough for Jake its good enough for me. "sixteen candles"
Really I have always loved Porsche's, bought a 924 in 1988 sold it 3 months later, always wanted a 944 so I finally found one. 1985.5 944 n/a.

Owned my car for 5 years now. Originally liked the 924 but loved the 944 when they came out. I can afford a 951 or 968 but choose to just enjoy the car that I have. The car and I both love PCA Skidpad days and DE events. As someone already mention if you want to be a fast driver learn to keep up the momentum, the NA is the perfect car. I now find myself captivated by the challenge of mastering the older 911s with their "querky" unforgiving handling. Maybe soon ... .

Purchased my 951 in 2002 I think. Can't remember exactly. Car is good mechanically with bad paint. I DE it when I can, but law school gets in the way. I hope to one day actually have a job and some $$ to track my car with a bigger turbo and better suspension whenever I want.

2) Why: Because it was there. A nice looking 924S sitting because of a timing belt failure and the owner tried (unsucessfully) to repair it and was selling it for $500. It looked too nice to be parted out and looked like a fun project.
3) Do the balance shaft and crankshaft seals while I was doing the head gasket kit and water pump. $30 more and no worries about leaks... it's a good idea. Add $30 more if you need the sleeve. And it's far easier to change out the oil cooler seals when the head is off the car. Should've done that then too. Without a reciept it's a safe bet that the seals are old.

Well I'm digging this up from the grave...came on here searching for a DIY for a starter replacement, cough cough if anyone could help.
Figured over 6 years later I'd share my story.
My love started with a Porsche 'Hot Wheels' it was a 911 Targa 964 gen, I believe. My dad had muscle cars (mostly Road Runners) a few Corvettes and a Plymouth Prowler...yeah i'm young 22 at the moment. Saw the 911 in person, fell in love with them, tried talking my dad into one, many of times...gave up around age 8 when I knew that wasn't happening, still isn't lol. Started looking for a Porsche at 12 or so on the internet, and in the local papers. Realized a 944 Turbo is affordable, looks spiffy, handles great, and can make a nice daily. All my friends said I was dumb (all into 1/4 mile racers) and that a Porsche is slow, got my first good job at 19 and bought a 944, an 83'. I had another car at the time, knowing my dad would be upset I bought a 2nd car with little knowledge or help (test drove, then bought, no second thoughts lol) I parked it at my brothers. Owned that baby for a year or so, without the parents knowing, even drove my mom around a few times (I was 'borrowing it' lol).
After my first P-car I got an Audi S4, then an Audi Allroad, both tweaked and pretty quick. When I got the S4 I had a c230 mb 06' and needed a winter car so I got the S4, still parking the 944 at my brothers, here I am 19-20 years old with 3 cars lol (my friends say I have a problem). I totaled the mb and then replaced it with the allroad, soon after sold the 944. Drove the s4 and allroad for over a year then an opportunity came up with a member here to trade my s4 plus some $$$ for my 86' 951 (silver green metallic, not mint, but I'm darn proud of her, not because of the mark, or the blood, sweat and tears into her, but because I wanted a 951 for so long. It was a 'dream car' and fortunately better than I imagined. So I start getting board with the allroad and said I need a larger car, somewhat high end, due to my job but I won't be afraid of driving in mud, dirt roads, in a foot of snow, or a sunny day. So I got a 06' Cayenne S. So now, I'm 22 with a 86' 951 and 06' CS, love both for their designed duties.
I'm not flashy, and try not to show off, I drive these cars because I love the brand (fanboy I reckon), and they do what they are built to do without any gripe.
I'm now on the hunt for another P-car to make number 4, I'm thinking an early 00' Boxster S with Litronic's and red/terracotta leather. Once I get that, I'll hopefully be able to hold off the urge to have time to build my house, and get married...then a 997 S, or Turbo or 996 GT3 who knows maybe the 911 will come before marriage haha. But the misses knows I have issues. And we can wait a few years (2 or 3) to be married.
