Default What kind of fuel do you guys run?

More of a question for n/a owners, but turbo guys can chime in also. I know the 951 requires (per the manual) 92 minimum octane (which kind of bites, since 91 is the highest available here in CA) and the n/a cars can run standard 87 octane pump gas. I used to run premium (91) in both, but given the recent gas price insanity, I've switched to 87 in the 944 n/a without obvious penalty or change in performance. Just wondering what others think / use. . .

I recently tried out a blend of one gallon toluene to a tank of high-octane in the 951. Ran well, but no obvious change in performance. Perhaps once I start running higher boost levels or use a more toluene-heavy blend (or both. . .)

There is nothing to gain by just running the fuel. The reason you can make more power with it is because it allows you to advance ignition timing, or like you said run higher boost.

With the price of gas recently, I had been running Sam's Club regular in my car up untill the last tank...
I was getting around 290-300 miles per full tank before the low gass light would come on.
The last Sam's Club tank netted me 347 miles before the when came on, with an autocross session on that tank
The last fill up I did, I put Union 76 Super Unleaded in the car. I am now at 236 miles on this tank, and the needle is buried at the empty mark. I also have an autocross sesiion on this tank.

Methinks something's wrong here.

What kind of chips are you running Ted? Are they particularly aggressive with the timing?

One of the reasons I wanted to experiment was to make sure I was getting the most I could out of my current Welt chips and that the "crap gas" we have here in CA wasn't causing the system to dial back the timing instead of running it in "go fast" mode with the most aggressive advanced settings. Since I felt no change, I guess the Welt chip maps run okay on standard CA 91 gas. . .

I have always run 93 octane in my turbo. I am not sure how advanced the timing is on the crappy chips I have.

I have the latest Vitesse maf software. The board has 2 maps (pump and race). I put the switch in the console. I am pretty sure all the race map does is advance the timing. I also have the SMT6 which I can use to play with the timing. (Although I haven't dared to mess with that yet! )

If you didn't notice a difference with the touline mixture, then the KLR is probably not pulling timing on 91. Until recently here all the Sunoco stations offered 94. Now I can't find it anywhere!

I'm pretty sure they are running a lil more alcohol to absorb more water and running a bit more water in the gas. I've been down on power since Hurricane Katrina.

In my '87 n/a i am running 89 octane. This is due to the FRWilk chip. Before that i was using 87 without issue.

91 for me... that is of course, a turbo. Am I crazy for building the motor I'm going to drop in the civic to have to run 91, when it will now take 87? lol... 11.5:1 or mayybe even 12:1 CR is def necassary for it.
