I actually hate the look of phone dial wheels but after seeing them with polished lip and graphite centers, I might have to do the same for my 15's. I bought some VHT wheel paint in aluminum but will definitely return it now that I see how much better the wheel looks in a darker color.
The question I have is after I get the out lips polished and the centers painted, should I shoot a coat of clear over the polished lips too?

I just refinished my phone dials, I would loved to have done a nice job on polishing them, but I couldn't find a good way to keep the bare aluminum from oxidizing long enough to do a clear coat. My next choice was black, but I saw an example and got turned off so I just went with a silver metalic powdercoat. Here's a pic...

I wanted to get mine powdercoated, so i took mine to a guy i know who has done powdercoating for years and he refused to do it saying that there is a posibility of the heat cycle damaging the wheels, so i painted mine instead.

I like phonies, too...they seem to look just right on a 944.
Awesome work by all. I can't wait to see the charcoal/polished ones on a car. Somehow, though, plain silver is still my favorite

Do you have a side shot of your car?, I think I like your color a lot."
Thanx bro.
To me what really makes my particular rims stand out is the black painted slots and lug holes.

It is pretty time consuming(either taping off or freehanding).
I went the freehand route, and used satin black lacquer painted with a fine haired sable artists brush(then several super thin coats of high gloss clearcoat over the whole rim).
Here's a few more pix:
