What do you think about this intake system for a 944?

Is this thing worth buying for my 944? Can't believe how cheap it is. I have read some stories of MAF going bad due to open intake systems. What's the word?

its just a normal cone filter...does nothing but make the car louder...

Goes good with Sesame Chicken

Campeck 09-21-2005 01:34 AM

complete crap. dont even touch it.
the entrance to the afm on the 944 is square. the cone filter exit is round. so you need an adapter that goes from round to square smoothly. so far Ive got the best one ive seen on my car. i used to have the filter mounted right at the afm like that "kit" = COMPLETE loss of torque all over the place.

i ended up making this (real) kit that puts the filter inside the fender. and found by the buttdyno(not accurate) it was the same or better than stock. but i do KNOW that it was better than putting it right at the afm..especially with that adapter. dont waste your money. wait till i get dyno time to see if my "kit" amde any hp and then get it from me. :p ;)

So from what I can gather, it is best to just keep the stock airbox. Should I change the stock filter element to a K&N ?

sure. i doubt like hell that hurts power. someone on here reccently had air/fuel ratio numbers that went from around 12.5 to 12.6 or something rather cause he was getting more air in the engine with the K&N filter. does it make more power? who knows...maybe 1hp. lol

Campeck 09-21-2005 01:49 AM

others. lol

good reads.

there is a huge debate for K&N... some say it hurts (me, and others) and some say it does nothing... overall, no gain.

My main reason, how can it let in more air without letting in more dirt?

Campeck 09-21-2005 08:53 AM

oh no! a .01 micron peace of dust just got in my engine! ;)

How much HP do you want to Lose! ;)

I run a stock paper filter in a stock air box in my 944-spec car. I feel no need run anything else.

great for de-tuning a 150 HP motor :to_order:

Ashton, what filter adaptor do you use? It doesn't look much different than the MSDS I used to run on my car. That thing had some subtle contouring from round to square as well. Certainly much better than some of the coffee can adaptors you see and ebay.

Campeck 09-21-2005 05:36 PM

i dont know. dad got me the kit on ebay. but i havent seen the adapter before. it may very well be MSDS.

My MSDS adapter was cast with"MSDS" on the side and is flowed. I yanked it and went back stock. It sounded good, but I noticed the torque fell and the oil was considerably dirtier with the cone. I did find that a Ford T-bird Turbo Coupe has a nice adapter that fits the 951 AFM to a 3" round.
