Default Leaky Power Steering Rack

Every 944 I've owned has had this issue. Heres the scenario: 944S2 bought just today, I got the owner down $500 for the leaky rack. I know that most of the time the leaks are from bad seals, but this rack empties its entire reservoir of fluid in 5 minutes of time. So now we may have a damaged rack. I'm not about to pay $500 for the rebuilt rack, I'd rather check the seals and hope one of them is that far gone that its dumping all the fluid, and not have to dump $500 on a old rack with new seals (rebuilt). Is buying a used non-leaky, yet non-rebuilt rack an option? Or should I concede and dump $500 into a new one if it isn't the seals that are leaking.

FYI I bought a rebuilt rack for 300CAD from a local guy here in Montreal. Are you sure you can't find something for a little less?

Even pelicanparts charges ~$523 or so without the core fee.

I should probably be asking, where can I get a cheaper rebuilt rack? Is a used one a bad idea?

Zims charges 260 and 200 in core (which is refunded almost instantly), I've bought a couple from them and am very happy with their rebuilds. Are you sure it's the rack, and not a split hose?

I'm really not sure, I'm just thinking worst case scenario till I can check it out. The guy that sold it to me told me that his mechanic said it would need to be replaced.

Why don't you rebuild it yourself? Get the kit from Rennbay, follow his tutorial and you're done. A day of your time and $70 is a pile better than $500.

You could also try ebay...

...or get a quality rebuilt rack from Griffith...

...so many choices.

I just threw mine out only hardware left is the rack. I think i may need some stubby tubes on each entrance to the rack for fluid to flow back and forth, but not sure yet.

Travis' Rennbay kit is the way to go if you have the time. I posted a few minutes ago about the same thing. Luckily I have a low mileage rebuilt unit so I can take my time rebuilding the leaky one I take off.
