Default Late center console armrest hinge thing that always breaks

So, when I bought my car the hinge in the center console was broken. The PO gave me a new one with the car. This was a little over two years ago maybe. Well it broke again. Instead of having to spend $20 (or whatever it costs) every couple of years, I tried using some small metal hinges from the local hardware store. They work OK, but not perfect. The side of the console with the hinges sticks up when it's closed so there is a gap, because the hinges do not sit flat with the plastic pieces, and the hinges themelves stick out a bit and are very noticable (and out of place looking). Has anyone figured out a good way to fix this issue that looks decent and won't break easily?

what kinda hinge? maybe a piano hinge is what youd rather use, you could paint it black and it would probably look uniform enough not to notice it.

Although I've looked at the other options availible, I want to keep the stock one.

I think the problem with that would be the number of holes that need to be made. If you look closely at the top of the console (the interior colored piece that attaches to the top of the plastic hinge) you'll see that it's a bit wider where the screws go in the stock assembly. Even just adding the four screws for the small hinges I used I had to be very careful not to tear the vinyl.
