Todd, since no one else is asking a question, I am sure Tifo won't mind if you go ahead with it. . .

Todd, go for it. No one else has stepped up to the plate, so it's your turn. Let's get this potty started.

This will be easy for some.....month and year that the rods and pistons got switched from forged to cast. And, besides the rods and pistons, what else is different?????

Hey guys, I just had a quick question, or rather, if someone could explain, the answer to

What year did a 951 first race in an organized, sanctioned event here in the USA? Of which the Answer was 24 hrs of Nelson Ledges in 1984.

Ok, I thought the 951 first appeared as a 1986 model. OR was the race model already around 2 yrs before its release. I could see it being around in mid/late 85 as an 86 model, but 84? Thanks guys. Just curious

The first '951' was technically out before it's release. The car was designated as a GTP model using the 944 crank case with a 16-valve head. This was the very first turbocharged 16- valve 4-cylinder Porsche made in the 924/944/968 generation. This was also Porsche's LAST 16-valve turbocharged for since more money would be invested in the later projects.

The 951 appeared in 1985 on the US side of the fence as a 1986 model.

Am I right? I'm out of OT now. can I ask another?

Not really.
The 924GTP is really a proper race car. It was 924GTR with audi based motor replaced with the 944 based motor. It did have 16v and a turbo. This I believe was raced in 1982 or maybe 1981. It was not really a 951.

The 944 Turbo that raced at Nelson Ledges in 1984 was a street car turned race car. I forget if it had the early dash or not, but it was protoype for the 951 road car. I believe the car also had 15" phone dials.

The 951 was sold in limited number as ROW car in 1985. US deliveries started with the 1986 model year

Why did Porsche, at the 1981 Le Mans, register the 944 LM as 924? Was it a pre-introdution before the Frankfurt Motor Show.

But at the official Le Mans site its called 924!?..

My own guess is that i was a kind of pre-intruduction. Anyone know the answer?

I don't think the 944 was a production car at the time. So it would have been like calling the new GT3RSR a GT10R? People would have wondered ... What the F#$% is that?... However a 924 was a known car at the time.

There were 178 MY1985 951 cars made for ROW (rest of world). MY1986 was the first year that North America saw the 951 (which, interestingly enough, was the largest production model year for 951's).

Porsche had made a few 951 test-mules over the two year period prior to the first MY1985 cars. Some were for on-track testing, a couple were used in races (like the one in the photo), and a few were driven daily by Porsche employees. The one in the photo I supplied had 15" phonedials and I am fairly certain an early 924-style dash (I have a few other photos that show a squarish profile on the dash area near the steering wheel, although I have no direct interior pics). The Nelson Ledges car appeared to have the 951 brake calipers on it, although some of the other test mules had the N/A floating single-piston calipers.

So *technically* there really was no MY1984 951. But the factory had already used that 951 monniker on the ongoing project so the test mules on the road and at races were "951"'s.

I hope that makes sense!
