I've run my 928 without timing covers for almost 3 years now, never had a problem, and it makes inspection and t-belt adjustment MUCH easier.

I am not familiar with your region but if the air has lots of sandy dust particles etc., best keep your covers on. Fine debris will stick to all your gear shafts and ruin your front engine seals. That is if you drive it.

What's the advantage of cadmium plating ?

Cadmium has very good corrosion resistance and lower friction than most platings. It was used on almost all fasteners installed on cars until 1993 (I think), then was banned because they found it to be toxic to the people doing the plating and installing them.

Interesting patina on that plating. It looks more like a metallizied arc-sprayed finish we use at work. Looks good and clean though. Cadmium plating is really tough to have done in this country due to the heavy metals issues. Arc spray eliminates the caustic solutions although I doubt if they even make a cadmium wire to use for the process.

Not sure if he was kidding or not, but George B of 944Ecology claimed in a thread over on Pelican that he has been running his car without the belt covers for years without a problem.

Living in my area, sand blows all over the damn place. Even washing the engine bay isn't really worth it, since 3 days later, it's dirty again.

I will say this, the power steering reserviour hose (one of them) split and spilled fluid all over the engine bay. If it wasn't for the front cover, the belts would have been soaks and probably slipped.

my front seals were really bad before i started this operation so i don't think the waterpump really could run at al.. it was soaked totaly.. it vas laying 0,5 cm with oily grease thing inside the belt cowers.. it was really ugly.. lucky the belts stayed in place.. so hope it vill be fine with new seals.. if i run it open i would see really quick if they start to leak again.. ? but ofcourse i broke one of the studs for the waterpump..
giving it a try with visegrip.. but have produced an bore steering.. to insert in the old waterpump stud hole.. so i can manage to drill straight in the center of the stud, then i can try extracting it.. ore something..

No covers for over a year and no problem. I had all my parts yellow zinc plated because I could not get the cad plating done.

Oh, and WELCOME to RENNLIST!
