Default engine compartment light question...

My 951 does not have an engine compartment light but a customer's car I have in now does. The light only comes on when the car is off and the turn signal switch is turned to the right. Seems a bit odd to me. Anyone else experience this? I am wondering if there is a short somewhere.

It's only supposed to come on when the lights are on.

...and when the turn signal switch is left in an "on" position, that activates the european parking lights for one side of the car or other...the lights are on then on, so the underhood light comes on. Try turning on the parking lights and see if the light comes on as well. It's my guess the answer will be yes...

I'll try that when I go to my shop tomorrow. THe part I thought was strange is his turn signals work fine, now that I replaced the relay, but the light only comes on when the switched is on for the right signal. It doesn't come on when swtiched to the left signal, the signal lights do come on as normal.

The right and left side running lights are on seperate circuits. The underhood light pulls power off the right side circuit. You can see the power feed on the underside of the fuse/relay board. Then add into the mix that the running (parking) lights for one side will light up with the car off but the turnsignal stalk switched to that side.

So that is why you see this strange behavior, but it is the way it is supposed to work. All is well.
