Question rear timing cover

hi, i own an 87 n/a and just purchased a water pump kit, but the pump looks different (mine has no plastic nozzle, but a bolt stickin out). haven't taken anything appart yet but was wondering if any mods ned to be made. i read somwhere that i need to cut a larger hole on the rear timing belt cover, or is that only done to older models? if i need to enlarge the hole, how much? my first time doing this. any other advice will be appreciated.

The plastic nozzle means that the pump you bought was originally meant for a Turbo car. The plastic nozzle is acutually meant to block off the area where a hose came out for the turbo model cars. This allows you to use the turbo style pump on the n/a cars.

I am pretty sure most '87 cars will not require you to cut the rear timing cover. This is mostly meant on cars which have not previously recieved the new style waterpump. Does the waterpump on your car right now have a silver (likely not silver anymore) metal 'belt guard' on the pump? It should...however if it dosent you will likely need to cut the cover to fit. Another way to tell is you will have a larger idler pulley, 46.2mm vs the older 32mm pulley. Like i said, im pretty sure all cars produced after the 1986 model year should already be using the updated pump and pulley.

Tomorrow i start the timing belt / waterpump job on my car, good luck with yours!

You can find a much more indepth waterpump update description on Clarks-Garage...
