Default No exhaust/cat = BAD!

So I was leaving town to move back to TN. 2 miles on the highway and my exhast breaks. MY GOD, these cars are sooooo loud without the exhaust or cat. I drove to my dad's storage building. The car sounds like an old crappy loud semi-truck when accelerating, and a racecar when I let off of the gas. The welds broke in front of the cat and the pipe came out. I jack it up and my dad says he can't weld it since it needs a wire-feed welder. We call a local exhaust shop and they can put my car on the rack immediately. 15 minutes and lots of odd looks later the kid at the shop was welding it back together. Awesome, and my slight rattle is gone now too! We also notice that there is a little threaded stem behind the O2 sensor that has a hole in the top. Anyone know what this is? He plugged it and I drove off. This also took care of my interior exhaust smell. Long story short, I'm moved into my apt. and having no exhaust sucks...oh yeah, I lost lots of horsepower.

At least it won't break in that exact spot again for 20 years

i just got finished replacing the exhaust manifolds on my M3 because one of them broke at the track. talk about loud! and i'll never curse the 944 headers anymore. the M3 headers were a bitch to reach all the nuts.

the threaded stem behind the O2 sensor is for a test tube that runs from the top of the engine bay, immediately behind the valve cover and down to the downpipe.

That nipple was for the exhaust sampling tube. They rust through, break off and cause a tapping sound (exhaust leak.) Good work fixing it!

Nope, he'd have still lost a lot of power because that absolutely FUBARs the resonance tuning.

it still sounds like nothing youve prolly ever heard before.
your to worried about not busting your eardrums than you are about how slow your car is untill you put the exhaust back on.

Haha, this reminds me of when the headers fell off my subaru. One day one of the studs snapped, and they slowly snapped one by one over 2-3 miles until I heard the headers fall on the road. I just pulled the entire exhaust, strapped it on the roof rack (THAT gets some strange looks!) and drove home. My head was pounding from the noise, and I'm sure everybody else's was too

I took the car up to 5k a couple of times...it was just crazy sounding. Weird after I got it fixed, too quiet. Time for a new muffler.

It's not that it's too quiet, it's that you now have a significant hearing loss from the open exhaust.

That happened on my 944-spec car once. I pulled the entire system and ran a race like that. Loud as hell and vibrated my seat too. No it was not in "fun" sort of way either

I had that happen on a 76 Cellica GT. It started on the Freeway and by the time I got downtown I had to use a wire to hold the manifold up so it would not rub the ground. You should have seen the looks the people on the street gave me, not to mention the carrpool buddies I had in the car. Sounded kind of like a dirt bike on steroids, and I kind of liked it.
Tthis was before the tuner fad too.

Yeah, I could definitely feel the vibrations.
At a couple of the lights people were just staring at me...
