Default Which numbers on the DME matter?

I was selling the DME from my parts car, then i realized something.. I believe they should be both using the same DME, especially since I'm taking the engine out of that car.. i see 3 different numbers here. Is 078 the only one that matters? because thats the only on ethat is the same...

1, mine
2 parts car

Well, which are which for. Shouldn't all 1985.5+ to 88 be the same? Both cars are 1985.5.. as far as I knew, mine was using the late electronics but with an early engine. I had a late afm on as well.

Here's what PET says...

Notice that mine looks as if it is correct for 85.5-87. Then there are a couple others for 88. Notice the one that is from my parts car, has no year designation... What gives?

Devon;

I can't find any references to a M44.40 engine in my tech spec book. Find the meaning of M44.40 and you should find your answer.

From http://www.cantonia.com/specifications.html

M44/40 Looks to be a 944S engine.

What? That doesn't make any sense, this parts car was supposedly a daily driver. Didn't look like the DME area was accessed in a long while.. can you use the 944S dme with a 944 without problems?

Hm, i just realized, the DME in question ends with 02, not 01.. so its not that m44/40 one then.. but its not in the PET at all?

FWIW, and not sure if it applies to your DME: There was a very early production run (beginning around January 85)o f 85.5s that used a unique DME. My old 85.5 used this version of Motronic. It used an EPROM just like the later cars.

This sounds like a possibility.. but are the DME's basically the same thing with a different part number? Or is theres omething that won't work correctly? I'm trying to sell the second dme and i don't want to make a mistake...

PS i will be running an FRWILK chip, it makes any difference.

The differences may be as subtle as different fuel curves or a change in ignition advance...

Look up a guy named John Speaks (in England, he rebuilds 928 LH boxes) he may be able to decipher the bosch #'s. His email is jdsporsche@ntlworld.com.
