M44.40 stands for the engine build *type* number, not to be confused with the engine serial number. This is located right above the actual engine serial number. Use the DME that is speced for your year and engine type number.
My early 1985 944 (9/84 build date–after summer factory holiday shut down and usally the beginning of installation of next year model changes) has a M44.02 engine in it.
edited... what I thought was a M44/07 on my motor is really M44/02. At least I don't need to scoop up the cardex to see if my numbers match.
My DME part number is 944.618.111.01

Devon, Ask FRWilk on the Pelican board. He's who sells the PowerProm chips everyone compliments. I had a similar decode problem with my Euro DME. Wasn't documented to be different, but WAS!
He was the one that ultimately generated the conclusive explanation.

I found a similar page to the lemon.com one.
Looks like it was from the remanufactured parts page.
It looks like for
994, 924S 1985/2-87 Engine Type M44.05/06/07/08
The control units Bosch 0 261 200 058 and Bosch 0 261 200 077
were the new parts issued when the cores were 944 618 121 02
and 944 618 121 04.
Not sure if that means they are interchangeable.

If you look at my picture of the PET on the first page, it says my car's 944.....04 number is for M44/07 or 08.
I think since the engine is m44/07 I will use mine, since the number is 04 it is probably a newer version than the 02... so I will probably use the later one.. Unless anyone knows anything different.
As far as I know, 111 is early 944 and 121 is 1985.5-87.. so i'm pretty sure that the 02 dme is probably compatable.
