Default 944s alternator question

Hey all,
I have been noticing my voltmeter on the dash of my 1988 944s has been inconsistent for a month or so. It seems like it may start at 13.5 v but slowly gets lower. It has gotten as low as 12v on a longer trip (1.5 hr). My question is this: When an alternator goes bad, does it start showing these symptoms (almost like it is getting tired???) or does it just go bad at once?

Has anyone seen a how-to on replacement? And are there any suggestions on which one to buy?

Thanks for the help

check the voltage at the batt terminals just after you start in the am and then again after the cars up to operating temp and compare to the voltmeter.

dont know about symptoms, it may be the VR. When my alternator went it just went. It isnt a bad job. You just have to take the airbox off if I remember correctly and you are right on top of it. 2 bolts on top/1 bolt that hgolds it to the ac compressor, disconnecting the power. and removing the belt is all there is to it. Good luck.

Mine just decided to go from 14+v to 12v, the "!" light was on and so was the voltage warning light. Basically, it was only reading the battery voltage.
