Default Odometer Gear

I replaced the odometer gear recently and it fixed my problem for a little while. The problem i have now is that the shaft that the gear slides on seems to shift which causes the gear to disengage. I have tried without luck to slide the brass ring located on the right side of the assembly over to lessen the amount of left to right travel of the gear. As a last resort i was thinking about adding another gear to the assembly in order to give it a better fit and prevent the left to right movement...before i spend another 40 plus bucks does anyone know how to align the gear on the shaft so it stays engaged? Thanks in advance for you help

Early dash?
The odo gear will slide and disengage on the shaft- I used a drop of super glue on the gear/shaft. That worked for quite a while but recently failed- I am also looking for a better solution.

it is an early dash...the gear fits tight, it takes a little force to get it to move...it's the shaft that is the problem, too much lateral movement...if there was a way to center the gear and then limit the amount of left -to right movement of the shaft that would fix the problem...
