The exhaust pipe runs right under there. Probably when you were slowing down and stopped the hot air raised. A lot of the time in my car the shifter boot gets warm because the rubber heat barrier under the leather is cracked or ripped. The reason it cooled down was because you started to move again and the hot air was blown away. I take it you are talking about the ash tray behind the shifter? It is most likely the exhaust heat then.

I have a similar problem, although my console gets very, very, very HOT around the shifter. It's an '87 automatic NA.

You can barely keep your hand on the console if you place it flat with the shift lever between your thumb and pointer finger.

I thought I might be missing a heat shield.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.
