M758,
You went off at turn 9 at Willow? Gees I would have shat myself! I haven't had the porsche there, but in a GSR I was seeing just about 120 at the end of the corner, entering just about 110 or so. Going off there seems like a near, or actuall death experience!

TD in DC,
Letting go of the wheel works in just about any car. the front wheels just line up with the road since its an easier path then scrubbing along sideways with no traction. It's best when the slide is more of a snap situation where you would never be able to countersteer quick enough by hand. In situations wher the rear comes around relativly slow, or little, I countersteer by hand, which are most situations. Don't let go of the gas when you let go of the wheel!

Not enough run-off room.

Yeah,
I was my thrid day at Willow ever and I was on my second qualfying lap. Came down through 8 flat out as usual. Then set-up for nine. Touched the brakes down shifted to 4th and turned in. I felt the back end move just bit. It had done so the practice session before too. I had corrected that one just fine, except I think I put a rear wheel off the edge. I can't remember exactly. Anyway this time did not correct it right and went off. I was dead straight with my foot on the brakes. Not much happend. I was not worried at first since I was under control with nothing to hit. Then a after a few seconds I saw the dirt mound. Well as it approached I reaized I was not to going to stop before I got there. So the car ran up the berm. It a a soft slow down.

I was however stuck. I had the tow truck drag me out then lift the front end of the car dragged me back in to the pits. I had torn up my front spoiler, bent the left tie rod and the left control arm. Radiator was pushed back a bit, but not damaged.

So I got lucky since I friend had a spare set of steel control arms. I quickly pulled my bent one off and replaced it. I also hammered the tie-rod back to almost straight, ripped off the broken parts of the spoiler and re did the toe.

I picked-up the class pole on the lap before my off. Started the raced on time and won my class.

I later learn what contribued to my problems. Getting the car on my trailer I had dragged the slider for my rear weltmeister sway bar. This loosend the rear bar a bit and made it uneven. This gave me a bit more understeer which I tried to balance with alittle more trail braking. Well it was a little too much trail braking that got me in trouble.

And talent. But we all suffer from a lack of talent from time to time. Mostly we get away with it, but occassionally it takes a bite out of our heinie.

It looks like the right rear tire is very low on pressure. When the car takes the set to the right it looks like its comming off the wheel. He's also countersteering before the rear of the car steps out to the left. I think he was on top of the situation and he had a tire issue.

Tire doesn't look low, tire looks actually a lot less soft than the person behind him. looks like he just has shorter than stock tires on.

Yeah, I've been known to let the wheel take over in a drift. It will spin smoothly to where it needs to be, getting steering back smoothly to end up in the right direction is the trick.

imho he just came in too hot for the turn and he would have been able to save it if he hadn't countersteered so early. he would've been able to avoid the wall AND avoid others behind him on the proper line.

like m758 said, with a minimal amount of countersteer he would've been able to drift around, although he would've indeed lost some time.
