Default Help with spring tensoner differences?

I see two different part numbers for the spring tensioners in my Parts and Technical Reference Catalog (1999 edition). I need to replace the spring tensioner on a 1988 924S. I currently have a new one here that is part number 944.105.067.16.

Pet (Feb. 2004 edition), and above catalog says its suppose to be PN 944.105.067.14.

It appears that the 1988 944S, 8 valves, use the spring tensioner with an extra cambelt idler roller mounted on it. The 924S does not use the extra roller. The 944S also shows using the .14 part number, but only in PET. I think I'm confused here. The Parts and Ref. Catalog shows that the 944S uses the .16 part number. My experience has been with the earlier, regular type tensioner.

Question. Are these spring tensioners actually the same, with no other differences? Can we use this part number on the 924S?

I'm suppose to help replace this tensioner tommorow morning on another members car, and this is the part we have right now. I just got this part in my hand, so I could see the part numbers. I can't see where there would be any real differences. But.......IS there? Thanks!

Hopefully Sracer can chime in here....
If the part is wrong, Vertex is going to hear it from me again. This'll be the second time.

Done man, thanks!
Sure would like to know why they updated it, and what the differences are....why change it if it works, right?

The difference between the tensioners for the 8v and 16v cars is to accomodate the difference in width between the belts. The 16v belt is slightly wider than the 8v belt.

The roller on the 16v tensioner is wider than the roller on the 8v tensioner, and, thus, the tensioner has more of a dogleg to allow the roller to fit into the same area.

And, here's the easy way to tell the two apart... the 8v tensioner has the marking "2v" on the arm, while the 16v tensioner has the marking "4v".

I don't know where you get the idea of an extra roller on the 16v tensioner, but there is none.

George. Thanks! The tensioner I have here does have the 4V on the arm. I got the extra roller idea from looking at the 8valve, 1988 944/2 Pet illustration 103-12. It looks like there is an extra roller mounted to the bottom of the tensioner. My mistake. I saw this on the 8 valve, not a 16. First I've ever heard of this. Maybe I'm just still confused! This tensioner I have, does have the threaded boss to support that roller also.

I guess what I could do is open up the front of the car, and compare the new against the existing one. But it sure sounds like I have the one for the 16 valve models here. The engine I need to put this in is the 8valve, M44.09 engine. Thanks again!!
