Default 944S vs. 944

I was wondering what the difference is between the 944S engine and the 944. I thought it was just twin cam but i wasnt sure what any other diffs were.

Also whats the difference between the S engine and the S2

The reason i ask is i was wondering if it was possible to just get a 16 valve head and put it on my NA

Not worth it....

Other than the block and crank, the engine is different. The transmission has slightly different ratios as well, DME is different too.

Yes, pistons have cuts to clear the valves, intake and airbox are TOTALLY different, not sure about the exhaust - maybe the same.

I am turning it into a track car - I have a nice stock 944 for cruising around now and the "S" would require major money to make showable.

not worth it!?
whats that based on? I was planning on doing this before my turbo idea popped up.
differences: intake, exhaust, and piston have extra notch. if your good with custom making stuff...making flanges for the S head and then just putting a normal na intake onto those flanges wouldnt be too hard.

pistons.....are you doing an engine rebuild soon? if your going to change the head the pistons arent to hard to remove and replace after that. it would be AWESOME if you did this. and i would definatly like too know power differences ect. if ppl get all pissy just shoot me a pm though.

I wonder if the S tranny is stronger? I have not heard of failures, and the NA trans does seem to fail with just the 150HP.

Anything is possible, all it takes is money! :-)

The main issues would be, besides those already listed, different wiring, and a different (stronger) transaxle/ring&pinion. Then there are numerous minor things like a different belt drive for the cam. Note the S trans is based on the turbo trans (without the oil cooler). There is relatively little difference between the S and S2 trans, though.

Besides the obvious bore differences, the major difference between the S and S2 motors is the block's design - the S2 block manages the airflow between the pistons. As with the transaxle, there are tons of detail differences, of course.

Also the S2 also has the same body style and brakes as a regular 951, and it has the same sway bars as a Turbo S, but the springs and torsion bars are in between the 951 and the 951S in terms of spring rate. I know the S2 gear ratios are not the same as a 951, but I'm not sure how they compare to the S.

yup. also has a very weird intake manifold and three bolt exhaust flanges.
the cylinders are all connected together. and the head/block have different water passages.

Hey Campeck,
The guy who bought the S head is real lucky.
The going rate is anywhere from 800-1200
on a good conditon head.

The S transaxle is nothing like the S2. The S2 has stronger 1st and 2nd and R&P like the turbo - the S does not.
I am using an S2 LSD trans in my 575 HP turbo right now and an S LSD trans in my 924S. If I put the S into my turbo, it would last a few accels before blowing apart.

Also - you can get a chip from Vitesse to use your 944 DME to run an S head - no big problem there.

You need exhaust and intake mani because the S head uses 3 bolt flanges.
