Well, im looking for a complete engine assembly that would be more or less ready to be put in.. and i was thinking about a few things...

My car is a 1987 NA automatic. What year engines will be able to fit without too much trouble. I know the 89s are 2.7s and i think the 88s had a higher compression... what about 83-87? are they all the same? What year should i stay away from or that it will be a hassle to put in?

Also, anyone near California or in California have a complete engine for sale?
There is one i saw and will end up getting if one doesnt show up in california. im trying to avoid shipping charges as much as i can, other than the fact that the engine im looking at now is far away, it seems perfectly fine.

One last thing, what is the price range for used and rebuilt engines? In my search ive found a few had been sold from 400-800. What are some figures for used engines?

TIA and hopefully ill be on the road again soon

if you are buying a complete engine, take a look at some turbo engines, or atleast S2 or 968. I found a complete turbo motor for my na for about 1500 and at first to cut costs just welded my NA cat back to it. It came with comps, everything, intake, exhaust man and cat. take a look around before putting the NA back in there. I sold my used na engine for 800, for your price range question and it had a 123k on it. the turbo motor had 60k on it. it was worth the extra 700 bucks!

No time or money or desire to put in a turbo engine. Its an automatic so that would mean i would have to swap it out for a manual. And i already have my hands full with a manual.. plus its a my daily driver so im satisfied with an NA

you can use any motor up to 1989 as long as you retain your original fuel injection components on it.

The 2.7L will go for a little bit more money. I wouldn't pay more than $1000 - $1200 for a na engine.

$1500 for a complete turbo motor with 60K miles on it??? That seems mighty low to me. But at that price can you find me one too...?

I am not an engine swapping expert but i know there are some differences between the years. For example all the engines from 87 on had the auto tensioners. I THINK the early engines had different pistons. I know there are a few other little differences, besides the compression etc on the later engines. Hopefully someone with some more knowledge can fill you in.

Good luck finding an engine!

Sorry for going off topic before but i can garentee any engine 86 and up will bolt right up. I am 98% sure earlier engines will fit as well.

It took a little searching but what im guessing happened was that they had the oil cooler seal break and the oil and coolant mixed, then that caused the head gasket to break and they changed the head gasket and rebuilt the head but when i took the oil cooler apart it had a ton of that 'muddy' oil and coolant mix, so all i had to do was clean it and put a new seal on. My guess is that they couldn't figure out the problem and just decided to sell the engine for cheap.

Wouldn't it be just the cat's meow if you could find a complete 968 Turbo engine? I've not seen many of those cars, but then I've not been looking either. Wonder what the engine availability would be like. Let me know if you see one!

You mean like this one?

I doubt very much anyone wouldl find a stock motor here in the US. From the guys that i know that have conversion 968 turbo's there are 2 known 968 turbo RS's in the US. And no known 968 Turbo S's...

Good Luck in the engine search. Since you are in CA have you looked at places like parts Heaven and the other dismantlers?

I had the same question. I snapped a head stud on an '86 NA and was looking for a replacement engine.

Here's a link to the great responses I recieved.

https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...eferrerid=7096

I ended up buying a running '87 NA Automatic with ~80K on it with a bad dampner for $1,500. Thought it would be the same as buying a $800-$1000 engine, plus get parts that I could take the best of and make a few $$. Ended up repairing the auto because it was in too good of shape to part.

My reciommendation would be to stay with an exact fit, '87 944 NA or 924S, either has chain tensioner. Eearlier models need retro fit (oil sender, fuel lines, etc) and have less HP. Later need DME etc.

Good luck.

Oh so pretty. Would be prettier if it were in my S2 though.

Seriously, one of these days I'll have mine built up to that. Someday. Figure around 2011 or so, barring unforeseen circumstances. . . .
