Default Damn Germans!-14 mm allen

OT but I've looked all over today trying to find a 14mm hex for the differential fill plugs on the 325...Sears has 12,15,17 but no 14, none at NAPA either. I wish they would just make hex head or square plugs like the rest of the civilized world...the search resumes in the morning. Guess I can try and flag down a Snap-On or Mac truck. Man, it's always something.

What might be easier is if you have a 14mm allen with a rounded head, cut it off and use it in a 6pt 14mm socket.

I hate the rounded or ball end wrenches too.

Also try zdmak.com

At this point I would take a 14mm allen with a 'pointed' head...it's finding the 14mm allen or allen socket that's holding me up...strange size I guess. Zdmak is where I bought my other alien tools also but I need it tomorrow. This would be perfect:

Kuhl,

Most bicycle components are designed to work primarily with Allen wrenches. You may want to try your local bike shop. Most stock Allen wrenches from 8 mm to 21 mm as standard sizing.

My local advanced auto has a set of: 12,14,17 mm 1/2" drive allens for under $8. Might be worth looking into.

I use a short 17mm bolthead with a couple of nuts on the end in my socket set to undo the gearbox drain plug. This should work for you as well.

That's good thinking! I'll give it a try if I can't find one 1st thing this morning. I should have plenty of 14mm bolts around here.

I can't think of any part on a bike that takes a 14mm Allen. The biggest is usually the crank bolt, and that is standardly an 8mm or 10mm.

Buy the 15mm and spend a few minutes with a file and convert one end to a 14. I've done this before for applications where the bolt is not a high-torque piece. The fill plug should not require a great deal of torque.

My first trans plug remover was a 17mm bolt with two nuts jammed on it. As stated above - you should be able to do the same thing with 14mm hardware (at least until you find the right tool). If you have a Harbor Freight near by - you might have a look there as well. Their stuff is not the highest quality - but their selection is usually very good and the prices can't be beat.

Home Depot. I bought a complete set of metric allen wrenches (with a cool handle for extra torque), for like $10. Husky (their own brand).

I went to 4 places this past weekend looking for a 12MM hex socket for my Ninja. Autozone was the only place that had any sizes over 10MM. You can get a package of 3 sockets including 12, 13, and 14MM for $10 (all 1/2" drive).
