Default Who uses Redline 80W140 ?

Hi,

Here is a brief timescale on how things have evolved on my car :
- May 2004 : Clutch starts to show signs of wear ; tranny doesn't make particular noise yet.
- July 2004 : Clutch get replaced ; TT is diagnosed with worn out bearings but is used back on the car until I have more time to take a look at it ; tranny and TT start to make noises when hot.
- September 2004 : Transmisson oil replacement, now on Motyl Gear 300 75W90. Noise in the transmission still as intense as before tranny oil replacement.
- May 2005 : TT rebuild and replacement ; no more TT bearing noises but the gearbox now makes even more noise/whine when hot.

Before looking for second hand gearbox or a rebuild, I'm thinking of trying Redline 80W140 in the transmission.
Is there anybody here who can share their experience with that oil ?

Any thought about transmission oil and my problem is of course welcome too.

TIA.

You should try the MTL 90 from Redline.
Works very well for my 951

You shouldn't try to bandage this problem with a thicker gear oil. It's most likely worn out/destroyed bearings in the transmission. Either get a used transmission and give this one to a shop to rebuild, or have it rebuilt.

Zero10,
you are right but I find sensible to try all the cheapest possible solutions before laying big cash.

Unfortunately, I see it as a grenade waiting to go off. See what you can do about grabbing a used transmission. Then either keep it, or use it while yours is rebuilt.

80W140 is pretty thick, and could cause some unforseen problems. I would imagine cold shifting would really suffer, which would be pretty hard on the syncro's. I don't know what else.
I hate to bear bad news like that.

I think I would try a synthetic with a good shock rating. You might try the Redline 75-90 with a bottle of their MTL first. Nothing can put metal back but some things can slow the loss down. Another transmission is probably not far down the road but this will buy you some time. 140W will kill you in winter, the MTL will help. It worked for me on twovery tired trans.

I've been looking at several used transmissions lately but I ignore how to perform a minimal check.

Should rotating the main shaft reveal something (perhaps broken ring & pinion) ? Any idea on how to perform minimal check by hand ?

TIA
