trunk release

what's the trick to pulling out the trunk release switch, without tearing up the carpet.

Hmmm...

If I remember right it just pops in with a spring steel clip on the end. Should not be a big deal as long as you don't use a crow bar!

Do you mean the switch ( located on the side firewall at your left foot), or the remote mechanism which pivots to unlock the hatch? If you mean the former, then the switch housing just pops off , revealing the ball bearing toggle. If it's the latter, then just "unbutton" the rear cargo carpet, and the mechanism is right there to work on.
