Question Driver Side Mirror

I have a 87 944S and the retaining screw that holds the driver side mirror housing onto the base (larger diameter retaining screw that electirc wiring runs through with heavy duty spring on the outside. Assembly is what lets the mirror fold and stay in position) has backed out. I have the mirror base remove and I cannot put enough pressure on the screw and spring to get it to rescrew in. How do I remove the mirror assembly from the door. There are no quick disconnects for the wiring so I guess I have to take the mirror apart somehow to disconnect the wire but for the life of me I cannot figure it out.

Aero Mirror Upgrade link in my sig has a procedure for taking the mirrors apart and putting them back together. Haven't tried it on a flag mirror - but I'm pretty sure it's the same.

This just came over the e-mail list -- used what they suggested and worked fine:

BTDT, get a large flathead screwdriver that will just fit in the hollow of
the "screw". Also use some Loctite sealant on the threads to prevent
reoccurence. Apply strong force in while turning the screw (to overcome
the opposing force from the spring). If the spring is still too stiff to
overcome, remove the weaker one of the 2 springs. Moral of the story is
don't fold the mirror more than is absolutely neccessary.
