I drove my son's 944 yesterday and it ran fine. Later in the day, the tach quit working and as I was sitting at a light I noticed the water light came on and the temp gauge was all the way to the right. As I pulled away from the light the tach started working and I heard the cooling fan kick on and the temperature started dropping. When I got home the coolant level was fine. I replaced the thermostat within the last 10K miles. Before this, the car regularly got to around 3/4 on the temp gauge, but the fan always brought it back down. My son told me that the tach has been working intermittently for some time. Is the tach and temp related to the same issue? Could this be a DME issue? Any info would be appreciated.

Sorry I don't have any solutions for you, just to say that my 86 NA has the intermittent tacho problem recently. I hope it's a grounding problem so I'm about to tackle that next.
Good Luck!

Wow, no way you just made this post! I have the same year, with the same problems.
And how would one go about doing this?

Time to clean all the connections! And then get the iceshark kit!

On the 84 944 Tachometer gauge issues, I had/have the same problem. It intermitted worked years ago and now it does not register anything. Where are the grounds and thing to check? BTW, I heard something about the tach signal coming from the distributor cap/rotor area, I have looked there, but I don't remember any ground wires...
