Question Quick/Easy/Stupid Timing Belt Question (with pic)

I am trying to understand all these posts and sites about updated and non updated.

Trying to decide if I need vertex's updated or non updated roller kit. This is an early engine as far as I know, i don't know if it matters. That guard on teh waterpump means it's the updated roller kit I need right?

Just want to make sure before I spend 30 more dollars...

Also if this is the upgraded kit that I need, could someone specify which idler is the one that is bigger on the updated? Just so I know.

Hey;

You do indeed have the updated pump there. The belt guard is part of that, as is the 46.2mm idler roller for the cam, current part # 944.105.241.03. The non updated early roller is 32mm if I remember right.

So in short, I would be ordering the updated roller kit when I do rollers and belts. I'm replacing teh wpump as well with new updated.

Devon,

The timing case is so clean, but why are the crakshaft pulleys rusty?

BTW, you need an updated roller when you use an updated (turbo) water pump because the updated water pump pulley is smaller in diameter. The extra large roller takes up the slack in the belt.

Really, my timing area is clean? I haven't really seen any others to compare. I have no idea why everything is the way it is.

To put it short, it's an early engine with unknown history that a PO mustve put in, put into a late car. I didn't know this until after I bought it. The AC was held on with one bolt because it is the late AC and the late alternator so that crank pulley is not the right number of ribs for the belt so I must use early alternator/ac belt. I'm changing the pulley in this rebuild though, (IF JAKE EVER GETS OFF HIS REAR AND SENDS ME IT)
It also had both idle stabilizers, the wrong fuel rail (put on with regular hose clamps) and a lot of other problems. hopefully they will all be sorted soon.
