I just picked up that 1.5 ton alum. jack from sears and quite like it. I too debated over the 3000# capacity, but it is used just to lift the car onto jack stands. When lifting the first side up with the other side on the ground the weight distribution changes as the car rises with more load going to the side on the ground - so you might say your only lifing 40% of the cars weight.
Switching to the other side - you probably start off lifting about 70%-80% of the cars weight, quickly shifting to about 50% when you set the stands. My feeling is the jack should work out well over time. we will see.
I couldn't see spending the extra $ to go for the bigger alum. jack. Otherwise it has a nice big bearing pad, it's easy to operate, and has a range of 3" to 19". Now i'm looking for a good set of jackstands.

That "Porsche" aluminum jack on ebay motors is just one of the standard aluminum no-name jacks with a Porsche crest glued on!?
Yea, it's not a bad jack for $40 but for $140? Acually $170 by the time you figure in S&H. If you can still find them at Walmart pick one up. I use it on the 944 all the time and it's just fine. It's about 5 to 7 pumps to full lift, for $170 I'd expect 2 or 3.

If you look at the bidding history it's the same guy bidding on it over and over. Buyer beware as usual.

I got the "all aluminum" one from sears... Fit's under the stock height S2 and still allows me to use the jack pad puck thingy that fits in the lift point (Keeps the side skirts from getting crushed). I don't have a garage... ~40 lbs is a LOT easier to haul up from the basement than my 90+ Lb steel one.
The all aluminum one works great for me.

No, they guarantee them for one year. They just replaced one for me I bought last year. If you buy a jack and want to have that guarantee you should save the receipt.

No complaints, they took care of me.

Cool, thanks!

Sears only guarantees the jacks for a year? That's lame, since I wont be using it that much...it'll probably break right after the year is up, my luck.

Anyone know who carries that Michelin mega jack?

The guarantee on my Michelin Jack is for 5 years but you have to send it in to a repair depot for the short term I can return it to Canadian Tire if required. I am not sure if the Michelin Jacks in the US carry the same guarantee.

The All Aluminum 2-ton jack is on sale at Sears - $179. Tempted by the sleek styling and light weight. I would need jack stands too.

Then there's the 3-ton steel jack for $63. What to do...? I have Jack Confusion!

I know what you mean, when I first saw the harbour freigt jack I was sold but after the honeymoon is over what you want is a jack to lift the car to maximum height safely without issues. The weight is only a problem if you have to transport it then lifting it comes into play. Thats why I got 2 wives... I mean 2 jacks the Michelin and the Harbour freight.
