Question What's an engine worth

I have a complete engine from a 1986 na. What is the thing worth? I think it was running when I took it out of the car.

Ultra low mile ones with records can fetch up to $1500, but usually go for $400-800 depending on miles and repair history.

Since there is hardly any demand for these engines, id say no more than $500 assuming it comes with all the accessories.

Well, since a timing belt / balance belt / waterpump / front seal job can cost more than the value of the engine, documentation of that work done recently can greatly increase the value of the engine.
I've seen whole cars (that need work) go for under $1000.

I paid $500 for my last 2 (each) - the most recent being a high mileage 88 in pretty good condition (88 is sought after engine due to higher HP and legal for SCCA ITS). Both needed belts and a water pump at the minimum. I am fully restoring the 88, which is basically tripling the purchase price. If you can't prove it runs, you can't expect much. All three of the engines I have purchased were verified to run and tested for compression. If it cannot be tested, you should expect the buyer to at least inspect the rod bearings and attempt to do a compression test (not easy without a starter, at least) - this should verify the valves are not bent.

50 bucks, consider it sold, paypal on the way, lol. Not sure for how long but, prices for these cars are down. I'd like to say 1000, but as it has been said, you can find cars for that now. Probably in the 400-800 dollar range depending on the details of it. I sold a good short block for 250 and heads can be found for 100-200.

If someone would like to up the ante on low mileage engines, I have a 23k mile 88 and a 49k mile 87 motor for sale. Both run fine. Still in cars. I'd sell either for $800 and will install all new belts/rollers, etc if you supply the parts.

Sad state is that it takes close to selling price just for the labor to remove a 944 engine, at my hourly rate anyway.

skip, don't you mean 89? i don't think 88 was a different engine. the 89 was the 2.7 and had more hp than the other years.

83-87 944 had a 9.7:1 compression ratio, the 88 had 10.2:1, so that's the one all us racers look for. Scott if you were closer...

With an 88 you need the electronics to make the extra CR usefull, but thats' simple stuff.

I use Estes for shipping large stuff. I imagine an engine to WI or Ca would be like $150-$250. Maybe less. e.g. I shipped a full 911 interior to Canada for $123.

I will be removing the engine and transmission from my '88 924S next month (replacing it with a 968 engine). I believe that this may be the highest compression engine of the lot and legal for ITS. In addition, the tranny is great for the track given it's short nature. These parts are from a low milage car (45,000 miles) and are in excellent condition. I have all service records as well. I'll take offers from Rennlisters prior to putting them up on EBAY.
