Default 944S Maint.

Hi, I'm trying to get back in a 944, hopefully before the fest. One of the cars I am looking at is a S model. I'm hesitant about buying the 16 valve engine because of its complexity. As far as timing belt maint. and other general issues, what EXTRA costs should I count on if I purchase this car. Does anyone recommend a 944 mechanic in the Indianapolis area? Thanks for your help. -Trevor

Make sure that you'll check/replace cam chain tensioner and the chain itself. If the tensioner works fine than change the plastic pad on it, it's only $20 from a porsche dealer, and most of the tensioner failures is becouse of this pad. The S model is a great car, just make sure to stay on top of the regural maintenance and everything will be fine. Good luck with the buy.

Thanks a lot, its still in the early stages however. I've had a bit of bad luck with my 325is, burnt ECU two weeks ago, tried to leave my garage yesterday and the slave cylinder went. My dad is telling me to buy american. We'll see how this goes.

Yeah, the chain tensioner is not to be trusted over, say, 75K. Exhaust costs more (2nd little muffler in the cat-back). TPS replacement, or any throttle work, will be more trouble since the intake manifold needs to come off. I think the ignition control module (ICM - it's an ignition final stage) is unique to the 16Vs, not sure if that really fails, but it's like $100.

Thats not horrible. I went from having a 01 Taurus and an 86 944 and then my dad lost his job and subsequent use of his company car. Being the good son I told him to drive the Taurus and I would trade for this BMW. To make a long story short all the work that supposedly had been done hadn't, I've had the 325 for a year and 21k miles, and things are starting to break. Some of you may remember the person I traded with, he came here and to Pelican offering exhausts and other parts and never produced anything. After about $1500 in repair bills in the past 3 weeks my dad is confusing corrolation and causation and thinks that a 200k mile abused american car would be cheaper to maintain. I'm just not sure how well a $1000 repair bill on my 'new' car is going to go over to well right now. I just wish I had the confidence to fix these cars myself. Any more input, and if anyone has a 944 for sale around Indy let me know, I may consider it. Thanks, TW
