Default odo gear

Well I was putting white faced gauges and new lighting in my instrument cluster and decided to go ahead and fix my odo. Well as i figured and read here on Rennlist the gear is stripped. I was wondering if anyone has an extra one laying around they would be willing to let go. Or If anyone knows where to get one, pretty cheap but quick. I was gunna go ahead and finish it without an odo since it hasnt worked for like 7 years anyway and just print off gauge faces without the slots. But o well i will just wait it out.

sorry 86 944 na

Get it from Travis at Rennbay. Not sure which model car you have (you should put that in your sig, as well as list at least your general location, helps out when answering questions), so here's the link to his odo gear page:

Travis got me mine in 2 days by priority mail last week. Highly recommended.

My gear was still working, but when I removed it, it crumbled. The new gear is crystal clear. Howard

ps - I also put in stainless steel rings- a nice $29 upgrade -

Ok, guys...I'm new so I hope this isn't inappropriate...but I have odo gear questions - searched the site & found this thread.
When I bought my car (1988 944 NA) a month or 2 ago, the PO said the odo gear was broken, and the part was ordered & on the way. I went to put it in yesterday using the wonderfully detailed instructions from Clark's Garage, which include a table specifying which gear (# of teeth) to use:

[ Odometer Gear Selector

Model : Odometer Type : Gear Type(# Teeth)
1982-1985 944 USA : Mechanical : 17
1985.5-On 944 USA : Electronic : 20 x 21*
1985.5-On 944 USA : Electronic : 20 x 22*
911 USA : Electronic : 20 x 30
968 All : Mechanical : 15

* Most 944s with electronic speedometers/odometers use a 20 x 21 tooth odometer gear. However, a small number of 944s use a 20 x 22 tooth gear. ]

Apparently, mine is one of the "small number" that use the 20x22. The gear my PO ordered from KLA is the 20x21. Spoke w/someone at KLA & they said they had never heard of 2 gears (identical in size) w/different # of teeth. I told him I was holding them in my hand, so they do exist. He said just use the 20x21; it won't make a difference. Spoke w/a local, reputable Porsche shop, and they said it will affect the MPH if I use the wrong gear. KLA guy said those gears should have nothing to do w/MPH, if anything, odo will be off by tenths.

Obviously, I'd like to put back on a part identical to that which I took off, but it doesn't appear to be easy to find. My questions: who's right? can I use the 20x21? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Just FYI, count the number of teeth on the gear this one meshes with. I forget how many teeth it has but figure out how much the gauge will be off by incrementing one extra tooth per revolution. I believe it comes out to about 3%.

And in addition the speedometer will not be off, only the odometer. You will still see the correct speed it will just log the miles at a 3% difference. About the same as buying smaller or larger tires.

I guess if I can't find a 20x22, I'll have to use the 20x21. But like I said, I'd rather put in the same as I took out, so does anyone know where I could get the 20x22 tooth gear? (Neither KLA nor Rennbay make it.) Again, thanks for any help............

This is what I went with, and he has the 20x22. Good part, good price and no problems in the 1.5 years since install. I even reset it while underway to freak people out. http://www.odometergears.com/subpages/porsche.html

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, IBKEVIN!!!!!!!

He had it, good price, quick shipping. I don't know if I'm brave enough to try the reset-while-moving trick, though...don't want to have to do this again!
