OK guys I really think it is in the tranny now. I have messed with the linkage etc and that is not working. I think either the reverse gear is stripped or something to that nature. What I need is a new transmission CHEAP!!! I also need someone somewhat local to help me put it in. I will compensate you for your time. I really need to get this thing fixed before 944 fest or im not going to be able to go.

I really really think that it is linkage related, but it may not be, we are gonna try to work on it soon. He is from Louisville, KY. Heres why I think it is Linkage related:
1. It just happened all of a sudden
2. He had just finished swaping shifters, to fix the wobble problem.
3. He has drained and changed the gear oil, with no sign of significant metal, or gears.
4. reverse doesn't seem like a gear that would go before the others.
Any other insight???

My suggestions didn't do anything? If the linkage was off a bit, that should help.

Sounds like the things(yeah tech term), the gear holders things. They have a spring with a ball that retains the gear cluster when it position. They are servicable externally and possibly in the car also. If you can get the car to Cincy, I may be able to help. I have a few trannys, I'll play with one tomorrow AM and see what things look like.

BTW, does it click or feel positive when you put it into reverse, or just slip in real smooth like? If it doesn't have a positive engagement, I'd bet it is this part. I'll see about pics for you too.

Man I'm a post *****, oh well...

OK, towards the rear on the steele section(mid section) there is a 17mm bolt head as seen in the pics. This is the part I'm talking about. Also in the pics is the part out of the trans. it works only on reverse(I verified that) and should be accessable with the trans in the car. Here's some pics. I'm thinking that is the problem. I'd have to say collapsed spring or just badly worn or possibly just jammed and not holding it in gear. Youll have to pull it too see what happened.

ANDY, thanks for the pics. If I am looking at the tranny in the car could you please show me how to locate this 17mm?

Also if I can get the thing out would you be able to get one of those spring things up to LOU? I might actually be able to get this thing fixed before the fest.

on the passenger side of the trans, to the rear side of the axle and at the rear of the steele part of the trans(either rust or black) it is on the top. Youll see two allen plugs on that side, it is on top and above them. Show Carl the pics, he should be able to help you out too. He's pretty familiar with these cars. Also, you guys said you were messing with the linkage on the trans, the plug is in the same area but on the passenger side instead of the driver's side. Good luck

BTW, keep a magnet handy, you'll pull the plug and the spring(or peices of it) and the little cap/ball thing will probably be still in there. The parts in the pic are what you'll pull. I have a few trannies intact, I kinda want to keep them that way. I know Jeremy(Tifo) and Dale(Dales944) both have broken trannies in their garages. Check with them first. I think Jeremy has plans for his tho, prolly Dale would be the best bet.

to give you an idea, a brand new tranny from the Porsche Dealer will cost around $2000 with LSD...that is with PCA 15% discount too

this is what I'm told from the dealer guys but I bet you can find a good tranny for a lot less than that

I removed the part andy was talking about and it didnt seem to show any signs of wear. I cleaned it up and put it back in and ill be damned if it didnt engage reverse several times. I jumped the gun a little on saying that it was fixed and after driving it for awhile and then trying reverse it engages and then pops out. Then after a bit more driving it is back into not going at all. I think the spring is worn. I am 99.999% that this little part is the culprit and that is quite a relief. I am going to try to locate this part at the dealer tommorow and get a new one and I really think that will be then end of it. Thanks guys.

Check "Victory Import Parts" as well! They are out in the Fern Creek area (if you know where that is) and have many porsche parts. They can also order just about anything and usually have great prices.
