Default TPS removal - screws are stripped!?

Even easy stuff ain't easy on old cars! The TPS on the S2 is right out in the open, next to the throttle. The screws that attatch it to the throttle are also easy to get to.

Problem is, mine are stripped! They must be corroded to the throttle, and wont budge.

Is there an easy way to remove semi-stripped phillips screws, without me having to take off the throttle body?? What can I do?

Thanks.

AndyK-

First I would spray the screws with some PB Blaster in case there is any rust making things more difficult, then go head to Sears and pick some of these up...

Screw extractors

Good Luck!

Thanks Riff. Question though...if I use the screw extractors, will I need new screws? I am guessing they are special German screws I would need to find at a Porsche dealer??

Just pulled one of my screws off. It measures to a M4 machine screw and is roughly 1cm long, the length from the tip of the screw to right under the head of the screw. I think you could probably find this at any Autozone or perhaps even Sears.

I had this same problem on the turbo TPS. I just flattened a side of one of the screws head with a dremel and grabbed it with a needle nose, and once it got past the initial break away it went as smooth as butter. I had PB Blasted it before and let it soak...it was insane the amount of force I put on it and not have it move!

Thanks for the info! And thanks for pulling your screw to check the size Riff!
Testarossa mentioned in his thread Clark's Garage suggested replacing the screw with a 4MM Allen head?? Does this mean the screw should be 4MM as well? Heading to Sears now...would hate to go back again just to pick up a different screw!

Get one out and take it with you. Can you drill the head off?

Can't drill the head off, since there is no clearance in there for a drill. I bought the Sears stripped screw removers, but they didn't bite since I can't put enough force on the screw head at an angle.

If I use a Dremel tool to saw the head of the screws off...how do I get the shaft out of the throttle body?

I tried taking the throttle body out...but when I got to the coolant hose, and coolant went flying, I reconsidered!

What should I do?

Pinch the coolant hose(s) off with vise grips. It will be much easier to work on with the TB off.

If the car is off for a few hours, will there still be coolant flying out of the hoses when they are unclamped??

Very good possibility; just clamp that hose. Good luck getting those screws out, it will be a battle, but you will eventually win.

Also you might consider picking up the TB reseal kit from arnnworx as it comes with all new hardware...and its only $18.00.

What hardware does the TB reseal kit come with? Do I need it? Still didn't try to remove the TB yet, since I need the car to drive to the station in the morning. Wouldn't wanna start, then not be able to get the screws out, or, not be able to get the car back together!

Is there only that one coolant hose, or are there more in there?

Also....is there an unlimited supply of coolant to the Throttle body--or if I don't clamp the coolant hose, will it only spit out what is left in the hose?

I'm confusing myself!!

Andy- I'm not famaliar with the coolant line to the TB on an S2...but if its not pretty high up in the engine bay, a bunch of coolant will come out, but eventaully stop. I'd clamp it or plug it with a bolt while you are working with it.

On the S2, the TB is right behind the air flow meter...on top of the engine.
