Default Balance shaft seal replacement: newbie question - searched posts in vain!

For an '88 944NA...

As stated in the Title, cannot find any reference on the forums... assistance is very much appreciated.

As a first time owner, getting deep into a first go at timing/balance belt replacement and opted for seal replacement since I'm going in that deep already. In pulling the housings for the balancers I noticed the usually expected items being present, seal, o-ring, sleeve, etc... but also a very small plain ball bearing. Now this strikes me as odd as I cannot find any reference in any diagram, nor in this forum. Therefore, my newbie post, if anyone has seen this when they are changing seals could you please share some information as to placement upon reassembly? If not, recommendations as to what they were doing there in the first place!?

Thanks all.

"... but also a very small plain ball bearing."

Really? I'd like to see a pic of this. I'm not at all familiar with the later cars, just the earlies, but never heard of that being in there. Can ya snap a pic? Just one ball?, or the whole bearing? Maybe someone else can chime in on this one........I sure can't relate to it. I could'nt see anything like what you describe in the PET program for a '88 na.

PS Welcome to Rennlist!

Have a look at the roller. Could be a bearing from it.

Hmmmph...

While it is not an oddity to find no mention of many things in the FSM, it is exceedingly odd to find utterly unrelated parts inside balance belt nose cone housings, or any place else.

I think some Kraut at the factory was jerkin somebody's chain! Was there a note in there too?

Well, thats what you were describing alright! Wow! It doesn't belong THERE. It must have been one lonely little ball......poor little guy. LOL

Who knows, maybe someone THOUGHT, it might provide better oil slinging for the front bearing?

Whatever. I don't think your considering putting it back in...........are ya? LOL

Just got in from another 4 hours worth of cleaning, etc. Got the oil cooler seals replaced and am really close to buttoning everything up in prep for the belt replacements. Oh heck no, I inspected each balance shaft assembly very closely for wearing or channels from the infamous BS BB, if you will. Not sure what it was doing there but it "ain't" going back in! Thanks for the responses.

The note read: "Noch ein mal bier bitte!" LOL have a good one!

No doubt... no doubt. Two of them nonetheless, one out of each housing. I am going to inspect the rollers/tensioners that came out to see if something spun out of them. That's about all I can think of - either that or the last person in there placed them for some crude reason. Again, no signs of wearing in a track anywhere and I can't see as to how they wouldn't have made into the balance shaft housings if not.
