Default is there a way to test the speed/reference sensors

lately i've been having a no start issue and sometimes a shut down in the middle of driving issue. lol. then when i go and wiggle the 02 sensor area where the speed and reference sensors are and go back to try and start it it will start right back up.

however, many times i have removed the 02 sensor wiring harness from that bracket and only wiggled that, and then the car will start. i don't get it.

i'm pretty sure it's one of the flywheel sensors. but anyway, any help/suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Yep, get an oscilloscope, set it to 1.5vdc and 20ms, attaching the two signal wires to the connector. Using a screwdriver to pass over the working end of the sensor, check the waveform on the scope and match it to the waveform in the ignition section of the factory service manual.

Easy...

ok question....how exactly do you check for resistance with a multimeter on that harness as per clarks-garage instructions?

I believe you have to unplug the O2 sensor to check it. To ohm something out, connect one lead to the 02 sensor, and the other lead to a good ground source (maybe the neg batt terminal, maybe the auto's frame).

when my car is moving along, and it's about to shut down...it backfires a lot and as soon as i let off the gas the engine will shut off...would that be o2 sensor or flywheel sensor related? 02 sensor right?

I don't think either would cause that.

If your speed/ref is bad the car will just shut off. Like you turned the key. The DME will just stop the fuel and spark.

The O2 senor really only effects the car when the engine is cold. You can still drive without an O2 sensor.

well as soon as i wiggle those three the problem goes away and i can drive perfectly normal. so i'm thinking it has to be something associated with that.

The Speed/Reference sensor is actually in loop with the 02 sensor. If I can remember right, the Speed/Ref sensor uses the 02 as a ground or something. If the o2 sensor is disconnected, so is the speed/ref sensor.

If the problem goes away when you wiggle the wires, than it has to be a connection problem. I really don’t like the speed/ref sensors connector, its a horrible design. Instead of using those blasted metal clips I widened the area and used a zip tie to hold the wires together.

I would probably clean those connections with alcohol and make sure they stay connected.

wow thanks jared. i had no idea they were in loop. thanks! i will try cleaning them and if that doesnt work i'll make sure they stay connected. i believe it's the 02 sensor that has the problem staying connected. the design on that one sucks as well.

Are you sure that when you are moving those wires that you are not also moving the fuel injector harness. Maybe you have a short in that.

yes i am only moving the harnesses on that metal bracket at the back of the manifold. that long black cylinder shaped harness is the 02 sensor harness right?

Hmmm....

I've never seen an O2 connector that was in good pliable shape come loose. Ever. I have also never had a car with the O2 sensor unhooked fail to run from THAT. Yeh, they run a little rich, but... they run!
