If you're good, you can find a good engine for 1000-1500. Basic renegade kit is 2100. You spend the remaining 2k on improving cooling and other misc stuff.
It goes without saying, you have to do all the work yourself..

Even putting a Porsche engine back in costs more $ than you bargain for. I can't imagine the various and sundry things that go into a V8 conversion. I doubt it could be done for less than $5K.
Having said that, I understand why people don't like the sell-and-buy-a-turbo mentality. It was a hard decision to let go of my N/A, it meant a lot to me. However, the first time the boost rolled on in my turbo, I knew the N/A's days were numbered. I would have loved to have kept her (owned her for 8 years) and thrown a supercharger in. No one would have suspected the capabilities of the car. So I'd say go for it if you got the cash. Tim at SFR knows what he's doing so it's likely a good kit. Just make sure you upgrade the other components as well: brakes, suspension, etc. You don't want to end up killing yourself.

If your looking for Hp or just decent Hp then youd would have to do alot more then just slapping on a supercharger kit. Especially if you want to eventially crank up boost and run it safely. I guess for autocross no lag would be good. Wouldn't you experience some Hp loss being that its belt driven and the application is on a 2.5L 4 banger?? If you do like yer car and dont want to sell it wouldn't that mean your also satified with the power. Or else that would mean you dont like it.

Hasn't that always been the trade off b/t spuerchargers and turbos? Superchargers rob hp by running off the engine. Turbos use the hp-free exhaust gases, but have lag. I guess if you autocrossed only, the supercharger would be ideal. However, since mine is a daily driver, the turbo benefits far outweigh the supercharger. It's always a balancing test.

Superchargers are really nice for a daily driver because along with not having as much lag they create torque at lower rpms. makes it nice when you don't have to downshift to accelerate in traffic.

Superchargers are nice but for our cars installing
a centrifugal charger is not that much better than
a turbo with K27/6 conversion. In fact to even make
the 951 engine better, you can increase the compression
by a point.
