Default Head torque ?

Let me make sure I'm right before torque-ing the head. The PET says 20Nm + 90 + 90. But it also says to preload the gasket in three steps: 20Nm, 50Nm, and 90Nm respectively. That's got me a bit confused. I always thought it was the former, not the latter. Any help?

Probably means to torque it in three steps to 90nm, back off to zero and then retorque 20nm +90+90.
Give me 5min and I will check a mitchell manual.

There is a service bulletin in Alldata (couldn't get on mitchell) That only specifies the latter Torque spec but the repair section says to preload the gasket as I described above. Many models do this. How much in ftlbs is 90nm. I do not have a conversion chart in front of me.

Clark's garage has it in ft/lbs. It also shows the 86 turbo at 20Nm+90+90 and the older N/A at the same specs as the preload in the pic above.

If you'll look one page below that one it shows the 20Nm+90+90, hence my question

[QUOTE=bader$]There is a service bulletin in Alldata (couldn't get on mitchell) That only specifies the former. I think I would go with it. Torque to yeild is much better than straight ftlbs.

Michelle - the latest spec is as follows:

-Torque nuts to 20 NM (15 lb/ft)
-Torque nuts 90 DEGREES
-Torque nuts 90 DEGREES further

It is best to buy a $8.00 torque angle guage before you begin.
This method is much more accurate and modern, and has been adopted by Porsche.
Chase and oil all threads prior.

ALready done I bought the torque angle gauge last week. Clark's said to wait about 15 minutes before each step so I did that as well. The PET said to rough up the back of the head nut washers so they wouldn't turn. Never heard that one before but figured it couldn't hurt.

Hey, where did you pick up the torgue angle gauge? I do not think I have seen one in any parts stores around here. One of the places that found on the internet wanted $30.

Loosen it back up and do it again. After the first time the head was barely tight.
