Default Odd Coolant Setup

I was working on a friend's race-prepped 944. While I was checking out the engine, I noticed that the recirc line from the coolant res went to the waterpump, vice the top of the radiator. The line tapped into the pump where the coolant for the turbo water pump would be. (This is not a turbo) Looked also like the upper fitting for the radiator was capped. Anyone know why?? The owner doesn't.
Thanks

Possibly to circulate coolant before the thermostat opened? Don't know why youd want to do that though.

I am not sure. It is a motor recently put in the car, and it is a 2.7L, but never having seen an S2 motor not sure I would recognize...it did have auto tensioner.

S2 is a 3.0L DOHC the 2.7L is not an S2 motor.
