Default low oil warning

High scare-factor!!

My S2 -91 engine is running fine pressures on idle and ~4000rpm,
but it sends a low oil warning signal after it has been turned off and then restarted.

I assume that this has to do with the re-entry of oil back into the pan - the oil simply has not had time to filter down yet and the level is a little low when I re-start.

Solution: top off to full oil level.
BUT, Question: what is the correlation between the low oil warning and the pressure gauge?

It seems to me that if there is a healthy pressure, there must be enough fluids running...

Am I simplifying things and risking big bucks here or what?

I had a similar issue when I first got my 951. I went home and did an oil change to see if there was anything is the oil once drained. I found nothing, and put a Mahle filter on (replacing the Purolator filter that was on it). I never had the low oil light come on again.

Are you using a Mahle filter? I believe if you do a search you'll find that some filters work better on these cars that others due to the orientation of the filter and the drain feature inside them.

There is no correlation. The low warning comes from the sensor in the passenger side of the oil pan on post 86 models. The pressure sender for the pressure guage is screwed onto the oil filter housing.
You may have low oil level long before the pickup fails to pickup.

Thanks for your help!!

clarification needed:

>before the pickup fails to pickup
=means before the oil pump has no oil to pickup to the system?
