Question power steering

quick question. I my PS rack is leakings so I took off the pump pulley. There is fluid in resovior and I have been driving the car. I am waiting on the rack rebuild seals. Will driving the car like this damage the rack or is it simply like manual steering?

the fluid, as well as providing the pressure to move the tie rods also acts as a lubricant. as long as there is some fluid in there it's perfectly fine to drive it. and yes it's like manual steering. the ratios for wheel to wheel turn is just a tad bit off. i think i have yet to meet someone that has never had a p/s leak. lol. good luck with the reseal bud. take care.

Not to hijack this thread, but if I drive my car with a leaky rack will it damage anything? I'd like to know so I can take the PS belt off before anything gets damaged.

Mine doesn't leak a drop from the rack, and I have all original service records right down to a reverse-light bulb, so I know that no work has ever been done on it. I do, however have a leak from the resevioir, I think the hose may just need to be tightened. . . .

ha! you're leaking from the reservoir though...it's always something!

oh yeah, p/s fluid CAN damage eventuall if it eats away at your belts long enough. however the important one...your timing belt...SHOULD be protected by the timing belt cover. campeck, care to elaborate?

now that my car is on the jack stands with the wheels rotors and the works off there is so much I want to do. I need money

If I fix the rack leaks and yank off the PS pump and accessories and drive it as a manual, then what is the differecne between a standard rack?

what year is your 944? is it a early or late car? i have manual tie rod assemblies, a manual rack, and the intermediate shaft for an early car sitting right here if you're interested....everything you need for the conversion.

The 944 P/S system is notorious for leaking. I've never seen one that didn't to some degree. A manual rack is something I'd actually consider an upgrade for these cars; they're quite well designed and can turn even wider-than-stock front tires with minimal effort while standing still. The power steering really isn't all that necessary.

That said, you certainly can run more-or-less indefinitely with the belt disconnected provided there's adequate fluid to lubricate the internals of the system. Of course then you're lugging around about 20-30 extra pounds. . .

One reason I'd love to get my hands on a good '83. . .

Ahhh, I love the feel of manual steering. It seems the manual rack has less maintenance and weight and better range, I would definetly consider that an upgrade.

Has anyone just put fluid in their PS rack and then sealed it up? I'm think of doing this until I can find a manual rack. I have more leaks than I care to fix, I also have Victoracers on the car right now and the steering effort isn't bad. I just assume seal the fluid in the rack and remove everything else.

The second picture looks like what I have in the 951. Also it makes the oil change so much better Plus it feels great. My rack wouldn't leak unless it got really cold in Florida in the mid 20's low 30's it would leave a drop since the seals srank. Also it's pretty easy to change it out with a na 944 now the 951 gets a little harder with all the extra stuff on that side. Also you might want to pick up a new shaft since they are pretty cheap now.
