i did my oil cooler a couple months back...it wasn't hard but there was a lot of confusion in shimming the cooler housing so it got a proper seal...after going through the haynes and what was on clarks garage I found out there was service bulliten that did a 200% better job of explaining how it worked - fletch edited the procedure and now it's much easier for a DIY

btw...thanks for the drop links...they look solid and a much needed fix on my car

The title of this thread cracks me up every time I read it. I swear to God I think it's Rock EVERY TIME. It's so. . . Rock-esque. . .

Ummmm, where do you find said "Service Bulletin"? Please tell, I'm hours away from doing mine.

if you have water in the oil, change the rod bearings. i believe that having water in the oil led (at least in part) to my rod bearing failure, even after i had already changed the cooler seals.

I have oil in my water now, not water in my oil and the car won't be started again until the cooler is rebuilt.

there was an addendum to the factory manual and the items were added into the procedure at clark's garage

ooooohhh!!! That's much uglier than mine is, I just got mine out, tomorrow it's rebuild and hopefully install, I might be missing a seal though, I don't think PN 944 107 153 02 came i my kit, at least I didn't see it. I got the kit from the previous owner. I'll have to look in all the spare parts he gave me.

Not to scare you, but my milkshake condition was the result of a cracked head.

$5500.00 later, I don't have any milkshake condition, but my wallet's lighter!

Well thankfully I have a 8v head, so a replacement will be cheaper than a Tijuana *****.

The car drives perfectly fine. I'm not expecting a bad HG or anything of that sort. Even with 2 day shipping, I wont get my seals until Friday. Stupid holidays.

My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard

Bwahahah. Welcome to my world. When i bought my 84 the oil cooler seals took a huge dump. Its not a hard fix though. The early headers are a bitch to get off. We had to take them off to get to the oil cooler.

...damn right its better than yours, i can teach you but i have to charge

In my case the seal that I'm missing from my kit was obviously the culprit, it was all deteriorated. The rest of the seals seem alright. Figures!!
