Default I think I found the right car!

Something pulled me in a northeasterly direction today.
Came across a 1988 924 today. 105,000 miles. Blue, with cream/black interior.
I was very impressed with how clean this car was, inside and out.
It drove well, accellerated well, stopped decently. No funny smells, no funny knocks.
Sounded great. Started right up, no problem. Didn't see any smoke. Drove straight, handled nicely.
Engine was clean. Things looked good (sorry, no pics)
Power windows, power steering, A/C, cassette deck, sunroof, leather(ette?) seats.

My only issue was the steering wheel angle. Are those supposed to be tilt steering? Awfully low angle, rubbed a bit on my legs, and I'm not a "big" guy!

Overall, I'd say it's ten times nicer than the 924 I looked at a week ago for $3K

Dealer wants $6000 for it. Think it's too much? Just right?

I know...pre-peurchase inspection and all that. I can say the it doesn't leak. It was POURING rain drop the size of nickels today.
Where's a good place to get a PPI in or near Seattle?

Here's some pics!

WOW, that thing is CLEAN!!! $6k is way above average, but so is this car's condition. No dash cracks!? Dealers are always a bit higher.

Offer 3200. Thats fair market.
Pull the KBB and carfax, have it inspected. THEN kill the dealer.

Make sure EVERYTHING electrical works.

GO FOR IT!!!

Carfax checked out great. I'm not sure what KBB is though. I did check out that car using Edmunds.com and thier appraisal was pretty close to what the dealer wants. Thier appraisal was for "average" and I think this is above average.

No dash cracks at all.

Not sure about service records, but I'll look into it.
I've been out of the Porsche loop for a long time and was never really "in" it, since I only had a 924 years ago for a short time. I'm not sure what the 951 is..can you explain please?

SOme other things I forgot to mention. Carpets: clean as a whisle. Not a stain to be seen that I saw. Hatch opened and closed nicely. Seats were comfy, no sagging or tears. Everything felt very solid. No door clunking when opening or closing that I remember.

She sure is pretty... make damn sure she works right for that FAT cash.

If you wanna know the perils of a 924S let me know. I'm objective. Hell- I STILL love my car!

951 is the factory designation for a 944 turbo.

The 951 is a Porsche 944 Turbo. You can buy some ok 951's for $6k but its hit and miss. Make sure the t-belt has been changed and the clutch is strong or you will spend an extra 3k+ to get these items repaired. That car looks very clean from the pictures very above average for a 924S. If hes asking $6k I would offer $5k if he has some records. If he doesn't have records than the t-belt has to be changed otherwise if it breaks its $$$$$$. If he doesn't have records use this to your advantage to get a lower price Start at 4k and go from there, but hey thats just me.... Good Luck !

Dan.. 3800 is the most i'd give. Well sorted, with records. Period.

No records 2500. it's a buyers market- very soft right now.

Negotiate your best deal.

FWIW - I gave 3850 from the original owner with 66K miles many years ago. I had a LOT to bring it current, so thats a bone of contention. Eleven thousand later here I sit..and STILL loving it.

Chris,
Good clean cars are hard to come by and if you were to offer $3800 im sure the dealer would just laugh. .. Just giving advice if he wants to be able to drive home with the car!

I'm sure 38 or 40 $100 bills would talk. I've seen a-hole dealers that wouldnt budge- I'd move elsewhere. Walk like my *** was on fire.

I know the values of 924S's so well- but you have a point Danno.

There are 6 grand examples. think "Concourse"

Let the dealers figure out the profit margin- it's not what they would expect.

Timing belt, yeah? Sorry guys, my life revolves around guitars and related equipment....your language is alien

I'll definately ask for records and try to haggle him down if he can't produce. I think we're going back tomorrow to look at another car nearby...a super clean '95 BMW 325I for $9k. I'll probably pass, as it's an automatic, but either way I'll have to finance a couple grand for either. Whichever gets me the lowest monthly may be the winner, as I got a small business to keep running.
At least my wife votes or the Porsche this time

I can almost guarantee the dealer didnt pay more than 10% over KBB @ at 4300. Otherwise they would be GoodWill. Or a Loan Shark.

Your wife is OK in my book!!

Guitar guy, huh. I have a hotrodded (Luthier worked frets and neck) Kramer electric and a Ovation 12 string acoustic. You'd better be at 944Fest- Lots of guitar players there !

now I know what KBB is, thanks. Blue Book lists this car at $4,650 in "average" condition.
